The Political Ambiguity of Caring for the Poor

In case you think the last post was a veiled endorsement for Obama, here’s an article arguing that Mitt Romney is the candidate to vote for if you really care for the poor. Again, there are many schools of thought and it’s overly simplistic to think that voting for Romney means you don’t care about the poor and voting for Obama means you don’t care about the unborn. Many will abstain from voting as well, and there are good reasons that could be presented arguing for or against this position. Don’t be fooled into allowing these different ways of approaching political issues divide us.

I do not argue that those political positions are either wrong or right. Nor do I argue that Christians shouldn’t be involved in politics. While people whose faith has been politicized may well interpret me along such lines, I assure you that this is not what I’m saying. The issue is far more fundamental than how we should vote or participate in government. Rather, I hope to challenge the assumption that finding the right political path has anything to do with advancing the kingdom of God.
