Costly Discipleship

Reading Material into 2011

Bob AuBuchon via Compfight

Zack Hunt over at The American Jesus is doing a series of posts called “Blogmatics” in which he fleshes out the theological assumptions that inform his blog posts. A couple of days ago he discussed discipleship and the life that believers are called to in a post entitled Blogmatics: The Cost of Discipleship. He draws heavily on the thoughts of Dietrich Bonhoeffer in this post. God’s grace is given freely; it’s true. But the cost of accepting this gift of God is dear. We are called to imitate the life that Jesus lived, including his obedience and sacrifice. Zack nailed it in his blog post. We hope you’ll allow this post to challenge and encourage you.

From Zack’s thoughts:

I want a cross centered faith, a faith that makes demands of me each and every day to die to self in increasingly more radical ways. I want a faith that is fundamentally not about me, a faith that drags me kicking and screaming out of my comfort zone and to the feet of a stranger in need. I want a faith that tells me how to live, a faith that takes who I am and transforms me into who I need to be.

I want a faith that looks like Christ is still living and incarnate and walking the earth again through me.

Greg’s Response to Driscoll’s “Is God a Pacifist?” Part II

Waiting For The Word via Compfight To prove that “Jesus is not a pansy or a pacifist,” Driscoll by-passes the Gospels (understandably, given what Jesus has to say about the use of violence) and instead cites a passage from Revelation. This is a strategy Driscoll has used before. In an interview in Relevant Magazine several years…

The Incarnation as an Example of Cross-Cultural Love

Beautiful Faces of Palestine via Compfight Christena Cleveland wrote an excellent piece about the radical cross-cultural nature of the incarnation.  I’ve never thought of it quite this way before, but the incarnation is the most profound instance of entering into another culture in a selfless way. Moving outside of our “cultural comfort zone” to more…

Sermon Clip: Brain Reign

In this short clip, Greg Boyd discusses the 3 parts to who we are to help understand the brains role. What does role does the mind, body, and spirit play in who we are? In the full sermon we look at the New Testament teaching on reigning over the relational brain. Understanding how God wired…

The Bible, Government and Christian Anarchy

This “essay” contains my informal reflections on biblical texts that I believe support what some call “Christian Anarchy.” Consider it a very rough draft of a future project. I’ll argue that Kingdom people are called to pledge their allegiance to God alone, not to any nation, government, political party or ideology. Because Kingdom people are…
